Mat laying at Kamshet (Tower/Shelar)

Postby deepak » Wed Feb 17, 2010 8:54 pm

Summers are fast approaching. Temperatures are on the rise.

Its that time of the year when there's hardly any soft grass on the takeoff area. The whole place is loose mud which spoils everyone's gliders. The fine mud acts as grit and rubs away the non-porous layer more vigorously and also damages the glider material. I wonder if local pilots and schools can come together and have artificial mat laid out on Tower Hill and/or Shelar and even Pavana for that matter. I'd seen that done in Cape Town in South Africa where the two takeoff areas were all laid with mat so that no stones or mud would damage the glider on the takeoff area. I'm not sure how much cost is involved in this, but whatever that is, i'm sure with so many schools and pilots around ... we should be able to contribute a littleand make up quite a bit to have the place laid with the mats.

Remember, its for everyone's good and will make sure everyone's glider will be nice and safe while takeoff.

Regards,
Deepak

To the best of my knowledge, Tower Hill and Shelar - both belong to the Forest Department.

Cost of the mats:
About 200 Rs. per Square Meter. Good tent canvas. Lifetime about a season, I would say.

Maintainance:
A watchman that sleeps on the mats at night, should be available for about 3000 Rs. a month, so for Shelar and Tower Hill East and West, it will be around 9000 Rs. per month. Flying season from October to May should be about 72.000 Rs total.

So long
Stefan

PS. Personally I feel, groundhandling is the worst for a glider, so mats at the take off do not really matter for people who go out for groundhandling. A quick take off does not really spoil the glider. Mats are nice, if you have grabby underground, that "captures" or cuts the lines, but Tower Hill and Shelar are more smooth in this matter.

Point well taken Stefan. I still think its worth having a mat at the takeoff. Only problem, like you mentioned, security of the mat. It'll be very easy for anyone to take it off and use it in their homes as a floor mat ;)

Cost is major concern for all these things...Mat laying or Weather gadgets.
Security is another concern.

One major threat for mats... FIRE ! :o
Every year we face this issue at Tower Hill and Shelar. Pavna is not spared either...

We use a light Silpaulin sheet(40'x20'). It serves the purpose well & doesn't need permanent fixing hence no caretaker is needed. The retrieve can just fold it & bring it down to LZ .
